If your compass has a clinometer, you can do a lot more with it than just determine the slope of a hillside. I made a trig based table which will allow you to calculate height of objects such as trees or cliffs and also the distance across rivers or canyons. I like to build things without cordage whenever possible by just relying on tight fitting wood joints. It's good fun and a great way to practice your carving skills.
